THE IVOTE GUIDE
Use an Online Decision Wheel with Your Team
A decision wheel randomly chooses from a set of options. It can help a team move past small procedural choices, such as who presents next or which discussion topic to start with, without spending the meeting on the selection itself.
Choose a decision that suits random selection
A wheel is useful when the options are already acceptable to the people involved. Picking a starting presenter or a team lunch option can be a good fit. First agree that using a random result is appropriate for the decision.
Do not use a random result as a substitute for discussing a consequential product, staffing, or delivery decision. If the options carry different risks or constraints, work through those differences before deciding how to choose.
Add the options and make the rules clear
Open Quick Spin on the iVote home screen to use the decision wheel without creating a voting room. You can also open Wheel inside an active room, where the wheel starts with the room’s participant names.
Review the list before spinning. Remove entries that do not belong, check for duplicates, and agree whether the selected option should remain available for later turns. Make those choices before seeing the result so the process is understandable to everyone.
Use the result to keep the meeting moving
For a standup, pick who speaks first and let the team continue in its usual order. For a retrospective, pick a topic to start with after the team has agreed that every listed topic is worth discussing. In either case, the wheel handles the order while people handle the conversation.
If someone cannot participate in the selected task, address that practical constraint openly. The tool cannot know about availability, workload, or personal circumstances. A visible random selection is only one part of a fair process.
Keep estimation and random selection distinct
Planning poker gathers independent judgments about the size of work. A decision wheel chooses an option at random. If a reveal shows different estimates, ask why they differ before using any tie-breaker.
iVote includes both tools so a facilitator can run estimation rounds and make lightweight meeting choices in one place. Start with a planning poker room for estimates, or use Quick Spin directly for a standalone choice.
